Export Risk

Why Pesticide Residues Hold Up Export Consignments

Pesticide residue limits (MRLs) differ by destination market and are enforced through border checks and sampling. A lot that looks acceptable at origin can still fail at the port of import.

Limits differ by market

Limits vary by product and by pesticide. Where a market sets no specific limit, a strict default can apply (for example, 0.01 mg/kg in the EU).

Sampling at the port

Authorities can sample on arrival. Failed results can lead to holds, rejection, return or destruction of the lot, and alerts shared between border authorities (such as the EU's RASFF).

Commercial impact

Demurrage and storage, re-export or disposal costs, contract disputes, tighter checks on later shipments and lost buyer confidence.

Traceability gaps

Without knowing where and how a crop was grown, finding the source of a residue problem is slow and costly.

AMA Universal's response: IPM-oriented sourcing, specification review against the destination market's requirements, and testing where required. This reduces risk but cannot guarantee clearance; outcomes depend on the product, the lot and the importing authority. Rules change, so confirm current requirements for your market.
Quality & Testing

Quality & Testing for Export Shipments

Testing is arranged according to product specifications, destination-market requirements and buyer requirements. It is determined by the product, destination market, buyer specification, regulatory requirements and contract requirements. Not every product undergoes every test.

Examples, where applicable:

  • Pesticide residues / MRL
  • Aflatoxins
  • Ochratoxin A
  • Salmonella
  • E. coli
  • Ethylene oxide / related residues
  • Sudan dyes
  • Moisture
  • Ash
  • Acid-insoluble ash
  • Other product-specific parameters

Documentation & Compliance

Documentation and testing are handled according to the product, buyer requirements, destination market and applicable regulations. A certification is displayed only where AMA Universal holds it, or where it is clearly attributable to the relevant supplier or facility.
